DEUTZ AG, a leading provider of diesel engines, has decided to continue
its successful logistics partnership with Stute Verkehrs-GmbH, a wholly
owned subsidiary of Kühne + Nagel. The service agreement covers the management of the service centre in Cologne-Lind. The early decision to
extend it by a further five years through to the end of 2017 represents a
significant step in continuing this longstanding and successful
alliance.
At its plant in Cologne-Porz – one of the most modern of its kind worldwide – DEUTZ AG produces diesel engines for a broad spectrum of applications, from construction and agricultural equipment to locomotives and commercial vehicles. Just 10km away, STUTE has been operating a 25,000m² logistics centre for DEUTZ since 1992. All of the engine manufacturer's supply and disposal processes take place here.
"By signing this agreement, we are continuing our successful partnership of many years and are boosting the efficiency of our supply chain", says Gerhard Gehweiler, Senior Vice President Purchasing, of DEUTZ AG. "The crucial factor for us is that STUTE's outstanding flexibility and high quality enables it to adapt to our requirements, which are continually changing due to our extensive product range of engines with capacities ranging from 25kW to 520kW and many engine variants."
STUTE has also continually expanded the complex logistics centre over the years. There are now three fully automated high-bay storage facilities with 30,000 places, two automated small-parts stores with 88,000 places and various materialshandling technologies controlled by a cutting-edge IT system for supplying DEUTZ's production plant.
"The system has been optimally aligned with the requirements of the just-in-time supply processes at DEUTZ's tightly scheduled production plant", says Christian Dieckhöfer, Managing Director of Stute Verkehrs-GmbH. "Over the course of our long-term partnership, our integrated logistics solution has become an integral element of DEUTZ's production processes because we continuously review the processes and endeavour to offer the best delivery quality. We are highly familiar with our customer's needs and adapt our services accordingly to make sure it is a perfect fit."
The supply and disposal services that STUTE provides to the DEUTZ engine plant include goods inward, warehousing of 35,000 parts, production-based picking, just-in-time delivery with a response time of four hours, packing and preparation of the finished engines for shipment, empties management, carpentry and wooden packaging. STUTE provides a continuous shuttle service between the plant and the logistics centre. Currently, some 600 finished engines are shipped from the logistics centre daily.
"At DEUTZ, we believe that, besides the quality of our products, good service with professional supply chain management is critical to our success – particularly as we have returned to our strong growth trajectory", says Gehweiler. "Logistics specialists STUTE, who we have closely integrated into our processes, offer precisely these qualities. We are delighted to have extended the agreement and that our strong partnership is to continue."
