Following an excellent start to the year and a constantly growing order book, DEUTZ AG has now passed a further milestone. Yesterday afternoon the 2 millionth engine since the plant was commissioned in 1993 came off the assembly line in Cologne-Porz. The engine in question was a model 1013 engine, just one of the numerous DEUTZ engines manufactured in Porz which are used in a wide variety of applications such as construction equipment, power-generation plant, agricultural machinery, commercial vehicles, rail vehicles and ships.
As early as 1967, the Cologne-based engine manufacturer established a new research and development plant in the Porz district of the city. 26 years later, in June 1993, a new engine plant went into production there and it remains one of the most sophisticated of its kind in the world. The Porz plant currently employs a workforce of around 400.
Since 2010, the assembly line in Porz has been even more closely linked to its logistic supply chain because components are now received directly from the JIS assembly centre located in the immediate vicinity of the plant. This has allowed a significant reduction in the large number of separate components which the Tier 4 emissions standard in particular had obliged the assembly line to hold, and it has speeded up logistic procedures.
In December 2006, DEUTZ also moved its headquarters into a purpose-built office building in Cologne-Porz. The company's headquarters, the assembly plant and the main research and development work for DEUTZ compact engines are now all concentrated at this site. Altogether, 1,600 of DEUTZ's total workforce of around 3,800 are now employed at the Cologne-Porz site.
